Southend Deaf Bowls
Hello and welcome to our new website aims to give information and news about Southend Deaf Bowls.
Southend Deaf Bowls was formed in 2006 when a handful of bowlers first played indoors carpet bowls at Ipswich Deaf Club. Some bowlers also played lawn bowls a year later in regional Deaf competitions. Regular players were the late Willy Ball, Michael Harvey (deceased), Eric Bateman, Arthur Burgess, John George and Terry Greenwald. Steve Braybrook, Gill Carey, Derek King and Chrissie Greenwald joined the team in 2008. Alison Hare, Chris Lewell and Jim Gill played for our team when we played in Deaf competitions.
Today we have 13 mixed players which are Tuna Bangs, Eric Bateman, Steve Braybrook, Arthur Burgess, Gill Carey, John George, Chrissie Greenwald, Alison Hare, Derek King, Chris Lewell, John Ray, Paul Rutter and Mike Webster. Mandy Carey also played bowls for a short time.
Two teams went to Portugal and played in 3rd Deaf Bowls Festival at Villamoura last year. We were not successful but Mandy was the youngest player during the tournament. There will be two teams from Southend going to Alvor in October 2011 for 4th Deaf Bowls Festival. This will be fourth tournament since Southend Deaf Bowls teams first involved in 2009.
